Arts Enterprise funding for a project on migration, religious texts, and ceramic art

Arts enterprise purpleDr Casey Strine from Biblical Studies and a local ceramic artist and art psychotherapist Emilie Taylor will collaborate with refugees living in Sheffield to explore the meaning of sacred texts about forced migration.

The project entitled, ‘Where Have You Come From? Where Are You Going?’ will bring together a local artist, a biblical scholar and a group of refugees. The project will involve a small group of refugees in a series of workshops that combine practices from contextual exegesis and art therapy.  The sessions will involve reading religious texts on the theme of forced migration, such as stories about Abraham, Jacob, and the prophet Jeremiah (in the biblical books of Genesis, Exodus, and Jeremiah), selections from the Qur’an (e.g., Surat 4, 8, 14), and contemporary reflections on forced migration. These texts will provide a basis for a series of exercises led by Taylor in which the refugees participating will produce images that represent their interpretation of these stories.  Finally, those images will be incorporated into ceramic vessels made by the participants.  Together, the images and vessels will present the largely unheard refugee viewpoint on these ancient texts about migration. This project is funded by Arts Enterprise and Yorkshire Art Space.
