Department of Music joins Sheffield Music Hub

Music Article 6 - Hub editedThe Department of Music is joining Sheffield Music Hub in a partnership that will help us to reach many more young music learners in the city.

The Music Hub, funded by the Arts Council, incorporates the functions of the former Sheffield Music Service, offering instrumental lessons in schools and city-wide youth music ensembles. But it also does a lot else besides, acting as a broker for collaborations between its many partner organisations – including Music in the Round, Sheffield Music Academy and  Yorkshire Youth and Music, among many others. The Hub is also closely engaged with schools, with a remit to help develop school music curricula.

Partnership with the Hub will help the Department of Music to collaborate more effectively with other Sheffield-based music educators, and will open doors to a much closer engagement with local schools. It will add value to the exciting work the department already does with local children and young people, especially through our student volunteering initiative, Music in the City (MinC), members of which are already working closely with Hub staff.

The Department will take on a beacon role within the Hub, giving local music learners a taste of the next level in their music studies. As a first step, the Department will be welcoming children studying for music GCSE and A-level in local schools to the Jessop Building for a Music Study Day on 7 July 2014, an event made possible through the help and advice of Hub staff.
