George Nicholson shortlisted for British Composer Award and news of premiere

Dr George Nicholson’s Darkness Visible for bass clarinet and piano was shortlisted in the Solo/Duo category for the 2013 British Composer Award, along with works by Jonathan Harvey and Harrison Birtwistle. The eventual winner, announced in December, was Birtwistle.

A Reader in Composition in the Department of Music, George’s most recent large scale work – his Fourth String Quartet  – will be given its first performance by the Ligeti Quartet in London on 7 March. Later in the month they will be appearing at Firth Hall, and there will be an opportunity to hear the new piece along with quartets by Berg and Bartok.
